Since the start of the reality show centered around helping people shed pounds, being labeled a big loser is a goal many now strive for, myself included. I am, of course, talking about the Biggest Loser, and as you hopefully read in last week’s edition of the Mount Vernon Democrat, Posey County is about ready to start it’s second annual Biggest Loser contest.
I plan to take part in this competition and hope many of you do as well. Losing weight might be one of the most difficult challenges we face. We live in a state that’s made it into the top 10 for obesity among residents. We live in a society that makes it convenient and inexpensive to eat unhealthy foods. And we expect instant gratification more and more of the time.
Because we have to eat to survive, and because we’re not going to wake up
tomorrow in a world where we have to grow it, pick it or kill it if we want to
eat it, we have to make adjustments that allow us to eat healthy while continuing
to meet the rest of the day’s demands.
Most of us can’t do this alone, and we need the comradery and support of
others. These are a few reasons opportunities like the Biggest Loser weight
loss challenge are needed.
Breaking old habits is hard. Knowing the right thing to do is necessary, and
that information can be learned through the Biggest Loser gatherings. But more
is needed. Where the support usually comes in is actually doing the things we
know we should.
Many of us have life-long habits or even rituals that revolve around food,
whether it’s going through the drive-thru every morning for a breakfast sandwich
or donut, or pizza, beer and football on Sundays. These things evoke positive
responses from our brains, and some are even sentimental, because they
involve sharing good times with friends and family. These connections make
it even harder to give up certain foods or habits.
Becoming part of a Biggest Loser team and taking the challenge is a step
in turning those habits around, and creating new habits, which can be just as
meaningful and even lead to a healthier, happier future for your family.
