Thoughts of a displaced Hoosier Being a semiretired guy of some eighty plus
years now living in South Carolina I have struggled with the perpetual problem of widowhood — How to fill my days with a constructive activity.
One can only plant so many bulbs and bushes and mow the grass so many times a week. To become a daily bike rider is wholesome, filling about an hour each day and I believe it keeps the heart pumping regularly, but it’s only an hour and that isn’t
enough.
I need more. I am just not the country club type and have spent more than my share of years donating time and dollars to worthy causes.
Cannot envision joining ‘the boys’ for coffee at McDonalds every morning for an hour or two. I have neither the money nor talent to become a golfer. I need more.
Several years ago I found my answer to this vexing emptiness – I write letters. Yes, I write letters and send them to family and friends. Not the ‘Dear Aunt Emma, How are you? I am doing fine…” type. I call them ‘Billyletters.’ The subjects vary
greatly depending on the events of the day and/or my mood at the time.
Some are serious but most are light and whimsical.
My mailing list is up to some 40 lucky souls. More than a few times readers of my ‘Billyletters’have suggested they be published in some form. One person making such a suggestion is my lifelong friend Mr. Dick Hawley of your fair city (Mount Vernon).
Our friendship has lasted thru grade and high school as well as roommates for a year at the SAE fraternity house at Indiana University.
A couple of weeks ago he mentioned my stories might be worthy of space in The Mount Vernon Democrat.
Thus I wonder: Would Posey County be interested in the musings of a misplaced Hoosier in South Carolina?
So I contacted the editor, Angela Geralds who graciously asked me to submit an item or two for consideration.
Wonder what she’ll do with them. And if she did, would you read them?
