Each year, around Thanksgiving, I try to find little-known tidbits about the holiday. One such search showed me that President Lincoln was the president who declared Thanksgiving a national holiday, set the last Thursday of the month. An even lesser known part of that story is that he did so after a talk with a female writer of the time, Sarah Josepha Hale. She was editor of the Godey’s Lady’s Book and of the famous nursery rhyme, Mary Had a Little Lamb.
