  • Local agencies taking back unwanted prescription drugs week of April 23

    Through April 27, the Posey County Sheriff’s Office, the Mount Vernon Police, the Indiana State Police, and the Drug Enforcement Administration will give the public another opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs. Bring your medications for disposal. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.
    Pills can be turned in at the Posey County Sheriff’s Office and the Mount Vernon Police Department.  

  • Letter Carriers’ Food Drive

    The National Association of Letter Carriers’ Food Drive will be on Saturday, May 12. Your Postal Service letter carrier is asking everyone to place non-perishable food items by their mailbox on this day, for pickup by their letter carrier as they make their appointed rounds.
    All of the canned goods and other food items collected by the Mount Vernon city and rural carriers during this food drive will stay in Mount Vernon, to help families in need in our community.

    The Alexandrian Public Library will be closed on Thursday, April 26 for a staff training day.

  • Poseyville Carnegie Library to host Rock Garden Painting for Kids, April 26

    • Our first Ladies Tea Party was held on Saturday, April 14. Those who attended enjoyed blueberry scones, pumpkin bread, lemon bars and ginger snaps as well as traditional tea. Please watch for the date and time of our next tea party.
    • Please join us on Thursday April 26, at 3:30 p.m. for Garden Rock Painting for Kids. Please wear suitable clothing for painting.
    • The Poseyville Carnegie Public Library will be an early voting site on Saturday April 28, and Saturday May 5. Early voting will occur from 9 am to 3 pm.

  • Crop Cause We Care

    Saturday, Jan. 28 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the St. Francis cafeteria in Poseyville, join us for some special scrap booking and help Relay for Life all at the same time.
    You can enjoy lunch, dinner, snacks and beverages all provided during the event while scrap booking with your friends. Door prizes will be awarded throughout the day. Collect and turn in donations for Relay for Life, the person with the most donation money will win the Grand Prize. Plus, for every $20 in donation money you turn in, get two additional tickets for the door prizes!  

  • MVHS Class of 1962 to have planning meeting


    The Mount Vernon High School Class of 1962 is planning its 50th Class reunion. The first meeting will be Saturday, Jan. 28, 10 a.m. at the Alexandrian Public Library.
    Anyone interested in being a part of the celebration is encouraged to attend.

  • Mount Vernon graduate appointed as Columbus, Ind. Police Chief

    Concluding an extensive evaluation process, Columbus Mayor Kristen Brown announced her selection of Jason Maddix as Columbus’s next Chief of Police. Brown appointed Maddix on Dec. 31 during a swearing-in ceremony at Columbus City Hall.
    Maddix is a 1988 graduate of Mount Vernon High School. He is the son of Ora and Martha Maddix of Mount Vernon.
    Det. Maddix was chosen from a field of eight candidates, all of whom were interviewed by Brown, six representative Columbus police officers, Sheriff Mark Gorbett and Prosecutor Bill Nash.

    Art Show — The Alexandrian Public Library Presents: 2012 Posey County Winter’s End Art Show! Celebrate the end of winter with a visit to the Alexandrian Public Library for the next in their Honoring Heroes of Posey County exhibit series on Feb. 17, 18 and 19.
    This show promises to be a distinctly artful experience of original paintings, photographs, jewelry, prints and sculptures by dozens of local artists of all ages.

  • United Way surpasses 2011 goal

    The 2011 United Way of Posey County campaign has raised 103 percent of the $640,000 goal.
    “We have reached 103 percent of the goal because of the generosity of the Posey County community, and a successful campaign will mean being able to provide services for our community. Remember that contributions stay here to provide services to the people of Posey County and address community needs, and in times like these that is very important,” said 2011 campaign chairman Keith Spurgeon.

    Join Under the Beams as it continues to bring the world to our stage.  The 2012 season will again present an eclectic and exciting mix of concerts, featuring four of the finest performing groups found across the globe.  All concerts are held in New Harmony’s Rapp-Owen Granary on Saturday evenings beginning at 8 p.m.
