  • Be Safe Mowing

Recently, as I was driving through a neighboring county, I saw a sight that always makes me cringe. A young lady was mowing with a riding mower and she was holding an infant in her lap.
I could easily foresee a situation where that seems like a good idea. Time is short, the yard needs to be mowed, and there’s no one else to watch the baby.
She did have a firm grip on the child, so I’m sure she was convinced there was no danger. Perhaps she was right, but it’s still not a risk I’d be willing to take.

  • Annual benefit game helps Jacob's Village

Friday evening, those of us here in the Tri-State once again have an opportunity to have a great time and help a great cause, all at the same time.
Friday, May 11, is the 8th Annual Benefit Game for the Evansville Otters, and all proceeds go to Jacob’s Village, a non-profit residential community for disabled adults who need help with daily living.
Jacob’s Village is just across the Posey County line, in Vanderburgh County, off Indiana 66. Scott Huck, a New Harmony native, calls Jacobs Village home, as do several other area residents.

  • The truth about Postal reform

    By Reed Anfinson
President of the National Newspaper Association
And Publisher of the Swift County (MN) Monitor-News

Now that US Senate has passed a bill, S 1789, to reform the ailing US Postal Service, critics are trying to disable the bill on its way to the House of Representatives. Business Week recently catalogued unhappy stakeholders, including postal unions, postal management and some Republicans who wrongly think the bill burdens taxpayers.

  • Gavel Gamut: Shaggin' Flies

Mariano Rivera is the best closing pitcher in history. He plays for the Yankees so they probably just send him blank checks and he fills in an amount that feels right.
I have never been a Yankee fan or a Yankee hater, but I can relate to those legions of baseball fanatics who firmly assert “Yankee” is only the second word of their true name.
On the other hand, ever since Mickey Mantle escaped the lead mines of northeastern Oklahoma and engaged the game of baseball and the game of life with reckless abandon, the Yankees have been Jake with me.

  • Berm house is more energy efficient

“Your berm house must be toasty warm and keep your fuel heating costs nominal,” I said enviously to an acquaintance who lives close to Mt. Vernon. Her reply was, “No, it’s hard to heat.” My thoughts were, oh no, it wasn’t built right. A berm house built properly is an extremely energy efficient house.

  • Calling all music lovers

One review I read used the word “masterpiece.” Another hoped that the album’s release would spur a revival in the song cycle, or a composition of several songs meant to be performed as one unit. Whatever the reviews said, all were positive, and all told me more and more how fortunate we are to have such a superb performance coming to our doorsteps.

  • Gavel Gamut: Why America is different

America was born out of a fear of abusive power. When our Constitution was adopted in 1789 its genius was a separation of our government into three branches that checked the potential abuses of one another.
Our Judicial Branch is without the military and law enforcement power of the Executive Branch and has no power to raise revenues as does the Legislative Branch. But, when our struggling republic was in its infancy, the U.S. Supreme Court in Marbury v. Madison (1803) established the pole star of American jurisprudence as opposed to that of other countries.
