  • Cats pick up court win, Vikings...

    The North Posey and Mount Vernon tennis teams were in action this past week. North Posey suffered a setback while Mount Vernon picked up a solid win.
    North Posey lost to Gibson Southern, 5-0. The junior varsity team also lost 4-1. Bri Brown, North Posey’s number three single, was the closest to a win, going three sets with Gibson Southern’s Haley Decker.

  • Posey County grads continue...

    Two Posey County graduates continue to excel in their running accomplishments by qualifying for NJCAA Outdoor Track Nationals in college. Hunter Motz and Ken Renshaw have performed well for the Vincennes University Trailblazers as freshmen.
    Motz, a North Posey graduate, qualified on April 28 at the Bellarmine Classic in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a personal record of 9:42. On May 4, Motz set a new best with a 9:41 at the NJCAA Regional in Toledo, Ohio where he took first place.

  • Bobcat wrestlers represent in...

    Two PAWS Elite wrestlers traveled to Indianapolis over the weekend to participate in the Indiana Freestyle State Tournament.
    Paul Konrath represented Mount Vernon in the Schoolboy 84-lb division and took first place. Austin Bethel wrestled in the Cadet 100-lb division and brought home second place.

  • Kiwanis golf scramble is June 8

    The Mount Vernon Kiwanis Golf Scramble will be Friday, June 8, at Western Hills Country Club. Cost is $75 per person and $300 per team. The price includes cart, lunch and prizes. Lunch is served at 11:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. There will also be a hole-in-one challenge. Expressway Auto of Mount Vernon is an event sponsor, and hole sponsorships will be available. For more information, call Ed Adams at 457-1183, Ryan Kelley at 833-2614 or Tracey Will at 449-5378.

  • Area baseball off to a good start

    The Mount Vernon Wildcats had a successful week, defeating the Reitz Panthers in dramatic fashion last Wednesday, 7-6 and defeating county rival North Posey at home on Saturday.
    In the game against Reitz at Bosse Field, Mount Vernon started off with a 7-0 lead. Several Wildcat batters contributed to the effort, and hits, especially doubles, were plentiful.
    Reitz  did stage a comeback toward the end of the game and had runners on second and third with one out in the bottom of the seventh.

  • Vikings win, Wildcats lose on...


    North Posey’s girls tennis team continues to play strong this season, posting a 5-0 win on Reitz last week.
    Winners were Shelby Ackerman over Mariah Bradley in number one singles, 6-2, 6-3, Natalie Thomas over Olivia Gaslin in number two singles, 7-6, 6-1, Megan Durchholz over Leah Adams in number three singles, 3-6, 6-4, 10-5, Wendi Simpson and Kendall Reidford over Alyssa Brothers and Ashlee Powers in number one doubles, 6-4, 3-6, 10-5, and Lindsey Droege and Bri Brown over Shelby Beavin and Cassidy Osbourne, 7-6, 7-5.

  • Peerman receives Jimmy Bender...

    A Mount Vernon seventh-grader has been given the Jimmy Bender award for the 2011 season. Dalton Peerman, who plays club ball for Mount Vernon and Evansville East, was given the honor.
    The award is named for Jimmy Bender, who played for South Youth League. He died of injuries he suffered when struck by a ball. The award is presented to a player who most exemplifies the qualities that made Evansville Youth League Baseball a proud and honorable program.
    Peerman, who demonstrated leadership, sportsmanship, determination and hustle, was given a plaque in memory of Bender.

  • Vikings beat North 12-10


    After a slow start, North Posey’s sluggers came away on top 12-10 against Evansville North Monday night.
    At the end of the second inning, it looked like the game might be all-Huskies, as North tallied a 6-0 lead fast against North Posey.
    North held their lead, allowing only one Viking run in the third, and adding a couple of their own. By the end of the fourth, the score was 7-1.

  • Softball gets underway in Posey...


    Mount Vernon’s softball team met both of its cross-county rivals this past week and went 1-1 in the county.
    The most recent of the two meetings was a matchup against the North Posey Vikings. The Wildcats traveled to Poseyville and came home with a loss, falling 8-1 to the Vikings.
    The game was close at 2-1 in favor of the home team until the fifth inning, when North Posey took advantage of some opportunities to widen the gap.
    It was during that inning that North Posey put six more runs on the board, taking an 8-1 lead.
