Biden Roasts Trump, GOP, Himself at Correspondents’ Dinner!!

The annual banquet of the White House press corps took place Saturday night, with a roasting of Washington, the journalists who cover it, and the guy in charge: President Joe Biden.

Biden was the first president in six years to accept an invitation to the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, which was postponed due to the pandemic in 2020 and 2021. While in office, Donald Trump avoided the event. “Imagine if my predecessor attended this dinner this year,” Biden said to a crowd of 2,600 people, including journalists, government officials, and celebrities. “Wow, that would have been quite the coup.”

The president used the chance to practice his comedy abilities, making light of the criticism he has received during his 15 months in office while criticizing his predecessor, the Republican Party, and the media. “Imagine if my predecessor attended this dinner this year,” Biden said to a crowd of 2,600 people, including journalists, government officials, and celebrities. “Wow, that would have been quite the coup.”

“There’s nothing I can say about the GOP that Kevin McCarthy hasn’t already put on video,” he remarked of roasting the GOP.

He also sneered at Fox News. “I understand there are some concerns regarding whether we should meet here tonight because of COVID. We’ve come to demonstrate to the country that we’re overcoming this scourge. Additionally, everyone must demonstrate that they have been fully vaccinated and boosted,” Biden stated. “All you have to do is email your favorite Fox News reporter.” They’ve all shown up. Boosted and vaccinated.”

The hour-long event featured taped skits by talk-show host James Corden, comedian Bill Eichner, and even Biden himself, in addition to statements from Biden and comic Trevor Noah. Noah expressed his gratitude to Biden by saying, “Thank you for having me here.” “And I was a little perplexed as to why me, but then I was told that when a multiracial African guy stands next to you, you get your highest approval ratings.”

While the majority of Biden’s address was packed with insults, he did mention the importance of media in American democracy, particularly in the recent decade. “I sincerely believe that you, the free press, matter more than you ever did in the previous century,” he remarked. “You are the truth’s defenders.”

Other somber moments of the event included honors to pioneer journalists of color, aspiring student reporters, and a dedication to journalists jailed, injured, or killed while covering Russia’s ongoing assault on Ukraine.

The correspondents’ dinner, Washington’s top news media event, brought together celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Pete Davidson, Brooke Shields, Caitlyn Jenner, Drew Barrymore, and Martha Stewart with journalists like CNN’s Jake Tapper and MSNBC’s Joy-Ann Reid. Secretary of State Antony Blinken was among the vast number of government officials and other significant persons there.

The president, accompanied by the first lady, attended the event while attempting to strike a delicate balance with a nation exhausted by the pandemic but facing an increase in infections. The president’s persistent national security threat has hit close to home: Vice President Kamala Harris tested positive this week, and Dr. Anthony Fauci skipped the dinner due to health concerns.

A highly contagious subvariant of omicron was causing a COVID-19 case increase in the United States, with confirmed infections rising to almost 44,000 per day, up from 26,000 a month before. Viral mortality and hospitalizations remained close to or around pandemic lows, with the BA.2 variety proving to be less lethal than previous virus variants.

Several attendees at the recent Gridiron Club press dinner in Washington tested positive for COVID-19, including members of Congress, Biden’s Cabinet, and journalists. Even before the Gridiron outbreak, the White House Correspondents’ Association mandated same-day antigen testing for its dinner guests and then added a vaccination requirement.

The “Let’s Go Brandon” phrase, which has become the right’s stand-in for swearing at the president, was also mocked by Biden.
