A Democrat from A Border State Criticizes Biden’s Measures to Address the Predicted Immigration Surge

Border state Democrat knocks Biden administration plans to mitigate expected migrant surge

A Democrat from a border state between the United States and Mexico joined a chorus of Republican lawmakers in criticizing the Biden administration’s plan to deal with a projected surge of migrants at the southern border after a Trump-era immigration limit expires.

“Increasing pressure on a system that can’t handle it increases the risk of a full-fledged humanitarian crisis on American soil, for which the White House and your department will bear complete responsibility. That is something that no one who cares about migrants should want “During a House panel hearing, Democratic Rep. Greg Stanton of Arizona informed Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. “The federal government does not appear to be prepared, in my opinion. That’s not even close.”

Stanton noted that migration difficulties are not unique to the United States, but she termed Trump’s approach “inhumane, counterproductive, and undermined the federal government’s long-term ability to process migrants through the system.”

The hearing takes place as the administration faces mounting criticism from Republicans and some Democrats over its approach to removing a Trump-era epidemic limitation on the US-Mexico border known as Title 42. Border officials can use this authority to deport migrants back to their home country immediately if a public health emergency exists. The Biden administration stated in April that the practice would be phased out on May 23.

However, Stanton said that a DHS memo describing border security preparations was insufficient in the face of record-breaking numbers.

“Even with Title 42 limits in place, Customs and Border Patrol was so overburdened that it had to expand the number of agents deployed along the southwest border by over 600 just two months ago, according to your memo. You requested an increase of a few hundred dollars “Stanton explained.

“But, Mr. Secretary, no rational person believes that modest staffing increases will enable the federal government to handle three times as many crossings. There’s no way, “Added he.

In response to some of Stanton’s concerns, Mayorkas stated that strengthening the capacity of nonprofit groups and cooperating with city, local, and state officials were all part of the strategy.

Mayorkas stated, “We will be prepared, and our strategy is comprehensive.”
In interrogating Mayorkas, Republican lawmakers blasted the Biden administration’s immigration policies, at times resorting to offensive racial stereotypes to condemn his leadership.

Republican Colorado Rep. Ken Buck chastised Mayorkas for reversing Trump-era immigration policy, claiming that Americans were fed up with Spanish-speaking students in schools, immigrants receiving medical care in hospitals, and salaries “suppressed by the large flood of employees.”

“Mayorkas, Secretary A lady approached me at an event this past weekend and asked whether I felt any shame for what you’ve done to this country. My question to you, Secretary Mayorkas, is straightforward. Could you please respond to that lady’s query? Do you feel guilty about what you’ve done to our country?” Buck was the one who inquired.

Mayorkas responded, “Congressman, I have so much to say.”

Buck remarked, “You’ve got a minute and 17 seconds to say it.”

“I’d like to respond to what you’ve just said. It is extremely offensive on so many levels and in so many ways. I’m not going to demand an apology from you “Mayorkas remarked.
