Looking for ways to save money this summer?
The Alexandrian Public Library can provide you with: free entertainment – films, music, books, and ideas for frugal fun; free subscriptions – read all the magazines and newspapers you want at no cost; do-it-yourself manuals to save money on home and car maintenance and repairs; financial advice – online databases, books and periodicals about investments, budgeting, paying for college, planning for retirement; cookbooks – how to prepare delicious, low cost meals at home; professional development – online databases, books and periodicals about how to get a job, get a promotion, change careers, start a business, return to school; and stress reduction – DVDs, CDs and books on how to relax, de-stress and take better care of your health; and materials to help you hold a garage sale, assess the value of your antiques and collectibles, trade on eBay, find treasures at flea markets.

Our summer reading program continues at the Alexandrian Public Library and there are still plenty of activities.

July 6 at 2 p.m. — Inside India - Tell a story using yoga poses, make a mandala, and taste a mango lassi. For ages 5 and older. Registration is required and begins June 22. (Participants should bring a beach towel or yoga mat.)

July 7 at 2 p.m. — The Laughs and Crafts Club - This is a special club featuring interactive stories, games, and crafts for kids who are entering kindergarten and up. Registration required.

July 7 at 2 p.m. — Henna Tattoos - Join us in India this week as we learn how to create cool temporary henna tattoos. For grades 6 - 12. No registration necessary.

July 11 at 2 p.m. — Teen Iron Chef: Pizza - When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie, that’s amore! Show your love for this Italian classic and battle it out for the title Teen Iron Chef. For grades 6 - 12. No registration necessary.

July 11 at 6 p.m. — Movie Mondays - Our free feature film selection for this week is Roman Holiday. A 1953 romantic comedy directed and produced by William Wyler and starring Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn.

July 12 at 10 a.m. — Mango Mania - Our “language of the week” program will be Italian. No registration is required for this program and there will be free Mango Smoothies, chips & salsa!

July 13 at 10 a.m. — Busy Hands - If you quilt, knit, do tatting, crochet, etc. come and join the fun!

July 13 at 10 a.m. — Basic Knitting - Have you ever wanted to learn how to knit?  Would you like to knit a scarf for the 2012 Super Bowl volunteers? Cheryl Caroll will be at the library to demonstrate how to stitch during our Basic Knitting Program.  She will teach casting on, knit and purl, and biding off techniques. Yarn will be provided and a limited number of size 8 needles will be available to borrow from the library. No registration is necessary but space is limited.

July 13 at 2 p.m. — Italian Street Festival - Try your luck at Tombola (Italian bingo), eat gelato, and play games like Tomato Toss and Meatball Mania. For ages 6 and older. Registration is required and is underway at the Youth Services Desk.

July 14 at 2 p.m. — Teen Advisory Board Meeting - The best way for you to find fun things to do at the library is to help make them happen. For those in grades 6-12.

July 14 at 6:30 p.m. — Glass Bead Bracelet Program - Come create a “one of a kind” bracelet using glass beads inspired by Venice!

July 18 - 2 p.m. — Medieval Mayhem - Hear ye, hear ye all Lords and Ladies. Travel back in time to England’s darkest days and join us for medieval merriments such as jousting, dragon-slaying and feasting like Arthur’s Knights of the Round Table. For grades 6 - 12.

Library Hours — Alexandrian Public Library is open Monday - Thursday, 9 a.m. - 8 p.m., Friday-Saturday, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., and Sunday, 1-5 p.m.
