Mount Vernon student Jackson Koch breaks through defensive lines as a fullback for the football team.

Power and bulk are key attributes for his position, so a love of power lifting works well for him.

Koch competed at the Battle on the Bay event in Corpus Christi, TX earlier this month and finished first in his class and was also named best teen lifter.

There were around eight lifters in his class, and 65 in the entire event.

Koch put up a 355-lb lift in the bench press, 507-lb in squats and 598-lb in the deadlift.

The chance to compete was one Koch was excited for.

“I did it last year,” he said. “I had a good time and wanted to do it again.”

Introduced to power lifting when he was around 14-years-old, Koch found it was something he enjoyed and excelled in.

Ryan, Koch’s dad, is a bodybuilder and introduced him to the gym at a young age.

“He got me into the gym and I have stuck to it ever since,” he said.

He hopes to continue power lifting into college and make it really big one day.
