Gibbs, Ghrist offer grand slam clinic

The Mount Vernon Girls’ Softball Team opened its season Saturday with two road wins, defeating Forest Park 12-3 in the morning and Loogootee 14-4 in the evening outing.

The Lady Cats won 12-3 over Forest Park on the road Saturday. Mount Vernon jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead at the end of the first inning when sophomore Megan Ghrist nailed a grand slam in her first official at-bat of the season. They scored two more in the second, making it a 6-0 gave after two. The Lady Cats scored three runs each in the fifth and sixth innings. Mount Vernon scored 12 runs on nine hits.

Senior pitcher Haley Goad allowed only five hits in her complete game. The Lady Cats backed her up defensively with no errors.

Ghrist went 2-4, including a double and a grand slam home run. Junior Sadie Hobbs had two hits, while sophomore Brooklyn Gibbs added a home run.


After a big win in their opener, the Lady Cats continued their victory tour with a 14-4 win at Loogootee.

It was a tie ballgame at the end of the first with each team scoring two runs.  The Lady Cats outscored Loogootee in the second inning 3-2, to make the score 5-4. After posting a run in each of the third and fourth innings, Mount Vernon began the onslaught, scoring seven runs in the fifth inning with four of those coming from the grand slam from Brooklyn Gibbs. The game was called after five innings of play, and the Lady Cats run-ruled the first team of the season.

Brooklyn Gibbs had three doubles and a grand slam for five RBIs on the day. Megan Ghrist was 3-4 with a single, double and home run. Lyndsay Keitel and Addie Robinson had two hits each. Sadie Hobbs, Haley Goad and Keitel each posted two RBIs.
Gibbs tallied the win on the mound, giving up four runs on three hits and three errors.
The Lady Cats are on the road this Saturday when they take on Big Eight rival Washington. Game time is 12 p.m.
They return home Monday, April 10, to host North Posey. Game time is 5 p.m.
