The Stargirl era at DC Comics is ending. The current third season of the show on The CW will be its last.
On Wednesdays, through December 7th, there will still be brand new episodes.
Geoff Johns’s sister died in a plane crash in 1996, and the role of Courtney Whitmore, played by Brec Bassinger, was the impetus for Johns to begin writing comic books.
The cancellation of DC’s Stargirl is the network’s latest series cancellation and comes less than a month after Nexstar Media Group’s purchase of the network was finalised. It follows the trend of recently cancelled shows including The Flash, Riverdale, and Nancy Drew.
According to Deadline’s sources, the creative team behind DC’s Stargirl, like Nancy Drew’s, was informed early on that this could be the series’ final season and instructed to create an ending accordingly. It is speculated that management at Nexstar made the choice.
Courtney Dugan (Courtney Hope) and her stepfather Pat Dugan (Luke Wilson) star in DC’s Stargirl, which chronicles the adventures of Courtney’s young superhero team as they attempt to live up to the heritage of DC’s original superhero team, the Justice Society of America.
In Season 3, Joel McHale‘s Starman returns from the grave to offer his services as a trainer to Courtney as she helps him settle into his new life in Blue Valley. But when a murder occurs, our heroes begin to doubt the former supervillains’ dedication to true reform, and Courtney, Pat, and Starman uncover a shocking secret that will rock their worlds.
For a variety of reasons, Stargirl has long been one of my favourite characters. Knowing that this could be the series’ final season due to impending changes at the network, Johns and his team “written with that in mind and delivered what I think to be the series’ best season to date, with perfect creative closure.” Thank you so much to the incredible actors and crew who worked so hard to make this series a reality. Brec went above and beyond my highest hopes by completely embodying Courtney in every aspect.
I owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to WBTV and The CW for providing us with a platform to tell this tale and celebrate the life of my dearly departed sister. I am also extremely appreciative to the press and fans who have consistently supported us over the show’s three excellent seasons. This point is typically skipped over in most series. We’re really happy with the show and the dedicated audience it’s garnered.
Bassinger continued, “It has been my absolute pleasure to play Stargirl and to be a part of the DC Universe. I’d like to express my gratitude to our fearless commander, Geoff Johns, as well as WBTV, The CW, the Stargirl cast and crew, and the fans. I appreciate it. I will always remember this show.
Since Nexstar management have made it apparent that the network’s attention will be directed toward retooling The CW and leaning toward unscripted content and series that appeal to an older audience, this development comes as no great surprise.
In the past, tweens and adolescents have been the primary demographic for shows like Riverdale, All American, Arrow, and Supernatural. However, the truth is that the typical age of a CW viewer is 58.

After the relocation, it is likely that other performances will be cancelled. All American (now in its fifth season), its spin-off All American: Homecoming (now in its second season), Walker (now in its third season), Superman & Lois (about to enter its third season), and Kung Fu (now in its third season) have yet to hear the network’s verdicts. Walker: Independence and The Winchesters, a spinoff of Supernatural, are both in their debut seasons, while Two Sentence Horror Stories, which concluded its third season in February, has not been renewed or cancelled.
Warner Bros. Television and Berlanti Productions’ DC series Stargirl are co-producers. Johns is the showrunner and an EP alongside Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter. Bassinger is joined by a stellar cast that includes Yvette Monreal, Anjelika Washington, Cameron Gellman, Trae Romano, Hunter Sansone, Meg DeLacy, Alkoya Brunson, Neil Hopkins, Joy Osmanski, Amy Smart, Luke Wilson, and Joel McHale.
