With Keshet International, Disney+ has a deal for the popular BBC drama The A Word and its spinoff Ralph & Katie.
The A Word, which stars Christopher Eccleston, will have all three seasons licenced to Disney+ in EMEA, along with Ralph & Katie’s pilot.
The A Word is already available on Disney+ in the Nordic countries and Belgium. Later, it will be made available in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Portugal, Italy, and Spain.
Israeli powerhouse Keshet is attending Mipcom Cannes, where the news broke on the first day.
The programmes are based on Keren Margalit’s Israeli family drama Yellow Peppers, which she made for Keshet Broadcasting.
Both have changed the landscape for disability representation in drama in the UK, according to showrunner Peter Bowker.
Ralph & Katie is the first major long-form drama to have two leads with Down’s syndrome and chronicles the adventures of two A Word characters who have the condition. It was created by one of the first ever all-disabled writers’ rooms. There is so much potential bubbling away among these Bowker previously told Deadline. There is a desire to be heard, and there is no real reason why writers with disabilities shouldn’t find employment.
The A Word, a film by Fifty Fathoms and Tiger Aspect, following a five-year-old with autistic tendencies as he struggles to communicate with his dysfunctional family while also dealing with their own apparent social difficulties.
“It’s incredibly satisfying to have been a part of the team that saw Keren Margalit‘s Yellow Peppers go from a lovely family drama here in Israel to a returning primetime BBC One drama that has sold in more than 80 territories and spawned its own spin-off,” said Keren Shahar, COO and President of Distribution for Keshet International.
