Fresh fruits: protection against diabetes and its complications

An important study reports that the consumption of fresh fruit is associated with a lower incidence of diabetes, but also of complications in people with diabetes.

The consumption of fruits and vegetables has already been associated with many health benefits, however, in the field of diabetes, there is still a shadow when it comes to fruits, due to their sugar content. Because sugars, whether they come from fruit or other sources, influence blood sugar. Hence the importance of this vast study conducted by researchers at the University of Oxford (UK) with a large Chinese cohort.

Three times more of diabetics if no or little fruit

Huaidong Du and his colleagues thus studied the data of nearly 500. China Kadoorie Biobank participants, a study set up to analyze the genetic and environmental causes of the main chronic diseases, and which includes 10 defined geographical regions of China.

A first finding is that the proportion of people who eat little or no fruit is three times higher among people who had diabetes at the start of the study, compared to people without diabetes.

The more fruit there is, the less there is diabetes and complications

At the end of a follow-up of 7 years, the researchers were able to observe an as inverse association between the consumption of fresh fruit and the risk of developing diabetes: daily consumption of fresh fruit is associated with a reduced risk of diabetes by 000%, compared to low or no consumption.

In addition, in people with diabetes, a high consumption of fresh fruit is associated lower risk of all-cause mortality (-17%) and macro- and microvascular complications (respectively -13% and -28%).

These data do not make it possible to establish a causal link, but even in the case of diabetes, the fruits fruits have their place in a balanced diet.
