Michelle Arroyo, Grayson’s mother, announced on social media on Tuesday, February 7, that her son had died. Grayson was first diagnosed with brain cancer in 2006, just three days after his sixth birthday, according to Arroyo’s support website. The cause of his death has not been made public.
“It breaks my heart to say that my sweet Gray died Sunday night. It was very unexpected because last week, they took CSF from his shunts and changed the valve setting on his shunt, and he was doing much better,” she wrote on Instagram with a photo of her son. “We were still having trouble with his diarrhoea, and because it was so low, I was giving him potassium three times a day. His heart stopped at home, so I did chest compressions to get it going again until the paramedics got there and took over. When he went to the hospital, he looked good and was breathing on his own, but his heart gave out again at the hospital.”
Arroyo said that she doesn’t “have all the answers right now,” but she did say that Grayson has been dealing with “fevers, infections, and low potassium” for the past few months, which “most likely took a toll on my sweet boy’s heart.”
She said, “I’m still in shock and going through the motions of taking care of all the details. I know Gray is playing cards with Grandma and playing Trouble with our beloved Diane. Mo, his dog, is right next to him because he never left him. #prayforgray, #amazinggray, #believeinmiracles, #lovemygray, and #captaingraythelord.”

After hearing the sad news, Smiley’s fiancee and fellow RHOC star Gretchen Rossi, with whom he has a 3-year-old daughter named Skylar, paid a touching tribute to Grayson.
“Our logical minds told us this day might come, but our hearts always held on to the hope that it wouldn’t,” the Bravo personality, who is 44 years old, wrote in the caption of a series of photos of Smiley and his son. “The loss of Gray has broken our hearts beyond repair. Grayson Arroyo-Smiley was an amazing person.
Rossi called Grayson “an angel on earth” and “an incredible warrior” before talking about how the Californian managed to stay positive even though he had been sick for most of his life.
“Every day, he fought through his pain and discomfort to find happiness in the smallest things,” she said. “No matter what was going on in his life, he was always singing, dancing, and laughing. He was a real lighthouse of hope and light.”
