Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, a new animated series planned for debut next year, was given its first peek in HBO Max’s 2022 preview teaser, which was unveiled earlier today. The series is a prequel to the 1980s Christmas classic Gremlins, and it follows Mr. Wing, who was the one who first introduced Gizmo to America. In the series’ first (brief) video, Gizmo appears to be walking on a rotating birdcage, treading water and remaining upright. The series has yet to be given a precise release date, although it wouldn’t be strange if it came out around the holidays next year.
Brendan Hay, the film’s executive producer, teased the clip on Twitter, saying that it’s the appropriate release date because Gremlins is a Christmas film. He also provides a precise timestamp for the video, which is useful because the HBO Max teaser has a LOT going on and practically nothing gets longer than a few seconds.

“It’s a prequel, after all. It all goes back to Mr. Wing when he was a little lad and first found the Mogwai “Joe Dante, the executive producer, told Daily Dead in 2020. “It’s set in China during the 1920s, it’s animated, and it’s huge in the sense that shooting it as a theatrical film would be prohibitively expensive. In animation, on the other hand, you can get away with practically anything. And it won’t be finished until 2021 or even the end of 2020.”
The Gremlins character Mr. Wing’s genesis story will be chronicled in Secrets of the Mogwai, which is set in 1920s Shanghai (Keye Luke). The series will depict how Sam Wing, a naive 10-year-old, encountered Gizmo, a young Mogwai. Sam and Gizmo embark on a treacherous voyage across the Chinese countryside with Elle, a young street robber, encountering and sometimes fighting colorful monsters and spirits from Chinese legend. They are followed by a power-hungry industrialist and his increasing army of evil Gremlins on their journey to return Gizmo to his family and unearth a legendary treasure.
