Grey’s Anatomy, a medical drama, has been entertaining us for 17 years. From the moment Meredith Grey and Derek Shepherd (McDreamy) first appeared on our screens, it’s been an emotional rollercoaster with countless twists and turns that has kept us all hooked year after year.
Here’s everything you need to know about Grey’s Anatomy season 18, including when it will air and who will be in it. Below you’ll find information about season 17, as well as where to binge watch all 17 seasons of Grey’s Anatomy, as well as updates on season 19.
Season 18 premiere date for Grey’s Anatomy
Season 18 of Grey’s Anatomy began on Sky Witness on Wednesday, November 10th at 9 p.m.
The drama series is now on hiatus and will return in the United States on Thursday, February 24, 2022, so we could expect new episodes in the UK soon.
Grey’s Anatomy season 17 premiered significantly later than usual in the United States due to the coronavirus epidemic, in November rather than the show’s customary late September time.
Season 18 began filming in August, with Ellen Pompeo posting a video of herself in the make-up chair on Instagram with the caption: “Can you tell what time it is? #GreysSeason18”
Is Grey’s Anatomy available on Netflix in other countries?
Season 18 of Grey’s Anatomy was supposed to arrive on Netflix in Latin America, Canada, and several Asian territories at the same time as it did in the United States in 2022.
However, it appears that this is no longer the case, since we’ve been informed that the series is departing Netflix internationally. As previously reported, on January 1st, 2022, a number of major Disney shows (primarily under the 20th Television label) will leave Netflix internationally. Every season of Grey’s Anatomy will be ending on January 1st.
If you live outside of these areas, it’s unlikely that Netflix will continue to air the show. Instead, Disney has decided to include the series under its Disney+ Star package.
Who is cast in Grey’s Anatomy?
Ellen Pompeo’s contract was coming to an end when Season 17 came to a close. Because it was unclear whether she would return as Meredith Grey for another season, showrunner Krista Vernoff claimed in interviews that she had two versions of the season 17 finale ready to go in case Pompeo did not return and it needed to function as a series finale.
Pompeo did agree to return, averting the situation, and she will return for Grey’s Anatomy season 18. However, her contract is only for a year, so it’s feasible that the whole thing will repeat itself.
Chandra Wilson and James Pickens Jr. are two more original cast members who have signed new contracts to return. Jesse Williams, another long-serving cast member, decided not to return for Season 18 after 12 years on the show.
Kevin McKidd, Camilla Luddington, and Kim Raver have all stated that they will be back for season two.
New Grey’s Anatomy cast members have also been announced.
According to Deadline, Peter Gallagher (The O.C., Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist) will play Dr. Alan Hamilton in a recurring role on the show. His character has a connection to Meredith’s late mother, Kate Burton’s Ellis Grey; Burton is also set to appear in many episodes in season 18.
Former cast members are also scheduled to return for a multi-episode arc, with Deadline claiming independently that Kate Walsh has signed on for season 18 to reprise her role as Addison Forbes Montgomery, while Abigail Spencer will reprise her role as Megan Hunt.
Skylar Astin, who starred in Pitch Perfect and Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, will join Grey’s Anatomy in a recurring role beginning with the March 24 episode, according to Variety. Todd Eames, played by Astin, will be a possible love interest for Camilla Luddington’s Jo Wilson.
What can we expect from Grey’s Anatomy season 18?
Season 17 of Grey’s Anatomy focused on the Covid-19 epidemic, with everyone at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital dealing with the crisis while also dealing with the drama of their daily lives, taking up where season 16 left off.
Season 18 appears to answer a number of things left unanswered in Season 17, and based on the trailer, it appears that there will be a huge return.
Megan Hunt (Abigail Spencer) and Addison Montgomery (Kate Walsh) both return for Season 18 after confirming it on her Instagram (see below).
We also know that after their departure in season 17, a couple of characters will be missing. After both went for the Catherine Fox Foundation in Boston, there was no more Jackson Avery (Jesse Williams) or Tom Koracick (Greg Germann), and there was no DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti) either.
