How To Set Up Your Own Parental Controls On Oculus Quest

Parental Controls On Oculus Quest

The Oculus Quest — now known as Meta Quest — is a lot of fun, but it’s difficult to know how your kids are using it without a screen you can watch with them. Although there are no parental controls in VR, you can still impose some limits using other features and devices.

You should be aware that there are no parental controls available in Quest

Understanding that there aren’t any is the first step towards setting up Quest parental controls. While the Quest requires a Facebook account to access, it does not have any content filters, thereby limiting it to anyone aged 13 and up.

You can, of course, look into the content ratings of certain games before allowing your children to purchase or play them. However, you won’t discover a filter that you may use to prohibit particular types of material. The Quest also features a built-in browser that lacks parental controls.

However, this does not rule out the possibility of VR parental controls.

Other gadgets can be cast to

One of the most significant drawbacks of VR parental controls is the lack of a screen to monitor what children are watching. Your children can use the headset to watch movies and web videos without having to show anyone else. By casting the in-headset view to another device, you can get around this.

To begin, ensure that the headset and the device to which you want to cast are connected to the same wifi network. Then, on your phone, download the Oculus app and go to Settings in the bottom right corner. To connect your headset and app, tap “Pair New Headset” and follow the on-screen instructions.

With the Oculus on, tap the symbol that looks like a headset with a wifi signal icon in the top right corner of your phone. Select your headset under “Cast From” and press “Start.” From there, you’ll get a live broadcast of the view through your phone’s headset.

Files should be saved

You can also sync stored files from your headset with the mobile app to keep track of what your kids are downloading. To access the main menu, hit the Oculus button on the headset, then select the Apps button. Tap the cloud icon in the top right corner of the Files app.

Any saved files are now visible in the Oculus mobile app under “Synced Media” under Devices. That way, you can keep an eye on the kind of content your kids save on the device – but bear in mind that this media will be deleted after 14 days.

Set up router limitations

While there are no parental restrictions integrated into Quest, you can use your wifi router to limit in-browser content. Most routers include parental controls, such as the ability to filter certain content, monitor traffic, and block specific websites.

Depending on your router, this will seem different. Check the directions for your router to discover what options you have and how to use them. However, these controls may not function with all browsers, so test it out first in your headset.

Other aspects of security to think about

Remember that no system is perfect, even if there are built-in VR parental controls. The best results will come from a mix of actions as well as the use of third-party network security tools.

Even if you don’t have any concerns about content, it’s a good idea to utilize these controls for overall security. Because VR headsets, like any other gadget, are vulnerable to hacking, it’s a good idea to keep a check on your Quest’s history and content.
