Following last year’s virtual presentation, the 37th Annual Independent Spirit Awards took held on Sunday in an in-person format. Many of the industry’s greatest personalities made the trip to Santa Monica’s beach in the hopes of winning one of the most coveted awards in independent film. The Spirit Awards are usually presented a week before the Oscars, but this year’s COVID-influenced awards season scheduling forced them to be held nearly a month earlier. The event was emceed by Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally, a Hollywood couple.
This year’s candidates are mostly indie hits like Oscar nominee “The Lost Daughter,” “C’mon C’mon,” and “Zola,” with independent hits like “The Lost Daughter,” “C’mon C’mon,” and “Zola” receiving the most nods. Netflix’s “The Lost Daughter” took up three awards, including Best Feature and Best Director Maggie Gyllenhaal. Simon Rex, an Oscar no-show, won Best Male Lead for A24’s “Red Rocket,” while Taylour Paige won Best Female Lead for “Zola,” the studio’s summer 2021 smash. On the television side, “Reservation Dogs,” “The Underground Railroad,” and “Squid Game” all won big.
