Grayson died on Sunday at the age of 55, according to a statement from his family that was released by New York radio station HOT 97. Grayson hosted “The Drama Hour” for more than two decades on HOT 97.

“DJ Kay Slay was a big part of hip hop culture and had millions of fans around the world,” the family said in a statement. “He will be remembered for his passion and excellence with a legacy that will last for generations,” the statement said.

When Grayson was a child, he lived in Harlem, which was a part of New York City’s early hip hop scene. She saw him in the 1983 hip-hop documentary Style Wars, which was about a group of young artists who were competing against each other.

Start: He sold bootleg mixes on street corners in the early 1990s. He released his first studio album, “The Streetsweeper Vol. 1,” in May 2003. Several more albums were made by Grayson. He worked with artists like Nas, Kendrick Lamar, Jadakiss, and Busta Rhymes.

A statement from the station read: “Hot 97 is shocked and saddened by the loss of our beloved DJ Kay Slay.”
