Kenneth Max Copeland was born in Lubbock, Texas, to Aubrey Wayne and Vinita Pearl (née Owens) Copeland. He grew raised near a US Army Air Forces airfield in West Texas, which inspired him to become a pilot.

Copeland was a music artist for Imperial Records who only had one Billboard Top 40 hit (“Pledge of Love,” which charted in the Top 40 on April 20, 1957, lasted 15 weeks, and peaked at #17). Copeland dedicated his life to preaching the gospel and ministering to others.
He started at Oral Roberts University in the fall of 1967, quickly rising through the ranks to become the university’s pilot and driver.

Private Planes

According to allegations, Copeland used church funds to purchase a $20 million Gulfstream V private jet from Tyler Perry. Following the purchase of the jet, he generated even more controversy by asking his fans to donate an extra $17–$20 million to refurbish his airport’s runway and hangar.


He is accused of utilising this plane for personal holidays and excursions to resorts. He has previously stated that he dislikes commercial flight because he does not want to “get into a tube with a bunch of demons.” Kenneth requested for tax-exempt status for his $3.6 million private planes with the IRS in 2009. His request was denied.

Copeland has been at the centre of several debates. Mike Huckabee appeared on his show several times in 2008 to sell a book. Huckabee also raised money for his presidential campaign through the ministries. The IRS questioned the church’s tax-exempt status as a result of the occurrences.

Kenneth sparked more controversy in mid-March 2020 when he claimed to have treated and protected his viewers from Coronavirus by blowing the “wind of God” towards the television (his breath).
