The 42-year-old singer is getting close to releasing his first full-length album in almost five years, and while the songs on it will make people cry, he can’t help but think back on one in particular that he composed years ago and it makes him think of a moment when he almost gave up on his wife.
The “Miss Independent” singer revealed to ET’s Deny Directo the significance of his new single, “Don’t Love Me,” off his upcoming album Self Explanatory (out July 15). He also revealed how his wife, Crystal, reacted to the song after hearing it. Although it’s an open letter to his wife, which the general public is aware of, Ne-Yo claims it brought them back to a time when their marriage was in trouble.
Ne-Yo added, “When she first heard the song, it reminded her of the moment we were in when I composed the song. Because the song was composed as we were considering getting a divorce, it was a bit of a tearjerker.
The second marriage of the three-time GRAMMY winner and Crystal took place in an extravagant Las Vegas wedding ceremony back in April. However, it took some time before the couple, who have three children together, experienced true happiness. Ne-Yo first made his decision to divorce Crystal public in February 2020. A month later, they were back together, and on New Year’s Eve 2020, he proposed to Crystal once more.
Ne-Yo claims he can now be truthful about his position in the marriage at that trying time after everything they’ve been through and a lot of introspection.
“I can now state this. The open letter was an attempt by me to get out of something, even if I didn’t understand it at the time, said Ne-Yo, whose other single, “You Got the Body,” “also just came out. “I was attempting to convince her that I couldn’t provide her the life she deserved. We’re in a terrific place now that I’ve discovered what I want from her and who I need to be for her.”
Ne-Yo can now truly give some sincere counsel to couples who are struggling the way he and Crystal were. Ne-Yo will be among the deluge of star presenters at Sunday’s BET Awards.

The singer advises, “You know what, I’d say above all don’t lie to yourself. “Know what you want to say and do, then say it. When you are in a relationship but don’t want to be in a relationship, you will never give that relationship you’re all. Don’t deceive yourself; you will never be what they need you to be for them. Be truthful to yourself. Cut the connections if you are certain that’s not what you want to do. There’s not going to be much turning back once the situation becomes increasingly toxic and you two grow to dislike one another.”
“And I thank God that we were not able to reach that location, he said, “because I know how difficult it is to leave. Above all, just pay attention to one another.”
