Taika Waititi is a name you’ll hear a lot in the entertainment news, and for good reason: he’s swiftly becoming one of the most well-known directors working today, with a slew of successful projects under his belt. The FX comic television series “Reservation Dogs,” which he co-created with Sterlin Harjo and was just renewed for a second season, is one of his most recent projects.
Elora Danan Postoak (Devery Jacobs), Bear Smallhill (D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai), Cheese (Lane Factor), and Willie Jack (Paulina Alexis) are four Indigenous teens who live on a reservation in rural Oklahoma and call themselves the Rez Dogs. The Rez Dogs do everything it takes to gather money for a cross-country move to get out of their current living circumstances, and they get themselves into quite a bit of mischief in the process.
Season 1 of “Reservation Dogs” taught the youngsters a lot about life and even more about themselves, but there are still a lot of unanswered concerns in season 2. Here’s all we know about the next season of “Reservation Dogs” thus far.
When will Reservation Dogs Season 2 be released?
“Reservation Dogs” was renewed for a second season in early September, with a launch date planned for 2022. The new series was first announced in 2019 when Taika Waititi himself tweeted the news, and the first season launched in August 2021. While we won’t have to wait nearly as long for Season 2, there is still some time before it airs – we wouldn’t be surprised if it premiered as early as next summer.
The show’s season renewal was announced by TVLine, which featured a statement from FX’s president of original programming, Nick Grad: “We were ecstatic to be able to expose Reservation Dogs to fans, and we’re glad they seem to enjoy it as much as we do. We’re delighted to place an early purchase for the next season. Sterlin Harjo realised his creative vision, collaborating with Taika Waititi and the rest of the creative team, as well as the talented actors and crew, to create one of television’s best new comedies and a trailblazing showcase of diversity and raw talent.”
In Season 2 of Reservation Dogs, who will appear?
While no official word on the Season 2 cast has been released, the four series protagonists, Elora, Bear, Cheese, and Willie Jack, are likely to return. Bear’s mother Rita (Sarah Podemski), Officer Big (Zahn McClarnon), Mose (Lil Mike), Mekko (Funny Bone), and William “Spirit” Knifeman are all slated to make an appearance (Dallas Goldtooth). Keep an eye out for any formal casting announcements since we might get to meet some new characters.
The first TV series with a full Indigenous team of writers, directors, and producers, as well as a majority Indigenous cast, “Reservation Dogs,” is making history in the entertainment industry (per Salon). Harjo also talked about how they approached the original casting process in order to find cast members that could properly represent Indigenous-Americans. “You have to travel to these areas to discover the actors,” he told Salon. “That’s the extent of [‘Reservation Dogs’].” We went out and cast in the surrounding areas. We went out and collected tapes from a number of Native American tribes. There is talent in the room. It’s only that it’s not on Hollywood Blvd.”
What will be the subject of discussion?
Plot points are still being ironed out, but there will be enough to explore following the completion of season one. According to ELLE.com, Jacobs believes that viewers will gain a “broader perspective” of the characters’ world. This might include more realistic depictions of adolescent life and weekend hangouts. “Our weekends were a tremendous period of drama, competition, flashiness, snagging, hooking up, and everything in between when I was growing up in my town,” she said. “We’ve only begun to scratch the surface of what this planet has to offer.” “In season 2, I’m excited to learn more about this town and the context in which these kids are growing up.”
Bear’s aspiring rapper father, Punkin (Sten Joddi), could make a cameo. (The only time fans have seen him thus far is in Season 1, Episode 4.) “He’s just in one episode [of Season 1], but if there’s a Season 2, will we see him again?” Woon-A-Tai told TV Line, “I believe we will.” “Do I think Punkin will pay a visit to Oklahoma?” “I don’t think so,” says the narrator.
What will happen in Season 2 of Reservation Dogs?
Elora, Bear, Cheese, and Willie Jack are at a fork in the road at the end of Season 1 of “Reservation Dogs.” Willie Jack admits she doesn’t want to go to California after all, causing the other members of the group to disagree about their intentions, particularly Elora and Bear. Elora eventually decides to go to California with Jackie (Elva Guerra), the leader of their group’s rival gang, causing a further schism between the Rez Dogs in Season 2.
Punkin Lusty (Sten Joddi), Bear’s estranged father, could also make an appearance. Woon-A-Tai offered his thoughts on his character maybe hearing from his father in the next season in an interview with TVLine: “I am confident that we will. Do I believe Punkin will visit Oklahoma? No, I don’t believe that is the case. I’m not sure if Bear will want to meet his father if the Reservation Dogs go to California (and that’s a big “if”). […] Will Punkin be able to redeem himself in subsequent episodes? That is something I am aware of. I’m not sure what the writers will do with it!” But it’s unclear whether Joddi will return to the project.
