Do you have any courage? As Elizabeth Moss’s character attempts to track down a time-traveling serial killer in Apple TV+’s latest series, Shining Girls, you’ll need all of your courage. Yes, we’ve already become addicted.
Shining Girls is based on Lauren Beukes’ award-winning novel of the same name and follows a newspaper archivist named Kirby Mizrachi (Elizabeth Moss) who teams up with a detective (Narcos’ Wagner Moura) to track down a serial killer. Of course, this isn’t your average murder investigation, as the culprit has the ability to move through time and space as long as he keeps killing. Is it gruesome enough for you yet?
What will the cast of The Shining Girls be like?
Elisabeth Moss was the first cast member to be revealed, according to an Apple TV+ press release. Moss rose to popularity after a supporting part on AMC’s period drama “Mad Men,” and has since 2017 been starring in “The Handmaid’s Tale,” a popular dystopian thriller. She’s also starred in films including “Shirley,” which will be released in 2020, and “The Invisible Man.”
Wagner Moura and Jamie Bell were the next two leads to be confirmed, according to Variety in May 2021. Moura is best known for his role as Pablo Escobar in the Netflix series “Narcos,” and will be featured in the upcoming “The Gray Man” alongside Chris Evans, Ryan Gosling, and a slew of other well-known actors. Bell is recognized for his appearances in films such as “Snowpiercer” in 2013, “Fantastic Four” in 2015, and “Rocketman” in 2019.
Phillipa Soo (“Hamilton”), Amy Brenneman (“Goliath,” “Tell Me Your Secrets”), and Christopher Denham round out the cast (“Utopia”).
What is the plot of The Shining Girls?
The novel that inspired “The Shining Girls” is set in Chicago during the Great Depression, and it concerns a vagabond named Hunter Curtis (Jamie Bell) who discovers a key to a mansion that allows him to travel through time. The mansion, however, comes with one condition: Hunter must kill “shining girls” – young, passionate women who “shine” with their promise — in order to travel through time. Hunter starts pursuing his victims in various ages until 1989, when one of them, a journalist called Kirby (Elisabeth Moss), survives his attack and begins fighting back. Wagner Moura also appears as Dan, a well-known journalist who is covering a copycat incident (via Variety).
We haven’t gotten a lot of information on the plot of the program yet, so we can guess that it will remain quite true to the source material for the time being. Moss’ casting was announced via Apple’s press release, and we learned a little more about her character’s role in the story. “Moss will star as a Chicago reporter who survives a violent assault only to discover her reality altering as she hunts down her perpetrator,” according to Apple. As a result, it appears that Kirby will become entangled in the time travel as she pursues Hunter.
The release date for Shining Girls has been set.
On Friday, April 29, 2022, the first three episodes of Shining Girls will be released worldwide. The remaining five episodes will air weekly on Fridays after that.
Official teaser for Shining Girls
Apple also released the official teaser for the compelling drama, in addition to the first look photograph. It’s only a minute long, but it gives you a good indication of what to expect from the show without giving too much away. Shining Girls appears to be a surreal storey that warps reality, based on the trailer.
