Skydance & Mattel Revving Up Matchbox Cars Live-Action Movie

At Skydance Media and Mattel, a live-action film based on the Matchbox die-cast toy cars is now under production.

After American Girl, Barney, Hot Wheels, Magic 8 Ball, Major Matt Mason, Masters of the Universe, Polly Pocket, Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots, Thomas & Friends, UNO, View-Master, Wishbone, the Christmas Balloon, and Barbie, the latter of which is a Warner Bros. film currently in production with Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling playing the iconic roles of Barbie and Ken, this is the fifteenth feature that Mattel is working on.

According to Robbie Brenner, Executive Producer of Mattel Films, “Matchbox has held huge cultural resonance for nearly 70 years and encouraged generations of children to unleash their imaginations, fusing what they see in the real world with what they envisage their own world to be. We are eager to collaborate with our outstanding colleagues at Skydance Media to create a film adaptation of this cherished Mattel series that will entertain viewers of all ages and capture the same innovative spirit.

Don Granger, President, of Skydance Feature Films said, “We are excited to be working with Robbie Brenner and her wonderful creative team at Mattel. The opportunity to combine Skydance’s own style of high-end, elevated action-adventure entertainment with the illustrious history of the Matchbox name is exciting. Everyone who has played with a Matchbox vehicle or playset has had the experience of coming up with their own creative action sequence, and we’re thrilled to make an international adventure movie that is worthy of such creativity.

To help his daughter, who was only permitted to bring a toy to school if it could fit in a matchbox, Jack Odell, an automotive specialist, and enthusiast designed the matchbox in 1953. An iconic business was created after his daughter’s schoolmates started screaming for matchbox cars. For nearly seven decades, the toy has been renowned for its high standards of authenticity. According to the business, a Matchbox car is sold every second.

The Matchbox project will be overseen by VP Elizabeth Bassin and Creative Executive Andrew Scannell for Mattel Films. For Skydance Media, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Aimee Rivera, and Granger will supervise. David Coggeshall, a three-time Black Lister who also penned draughts of Thundercats for Warner Bros. and Orphan: First Kill for Paramount, will pen the screenplay. Lee Daniels is presently shooting an untitled possession thriller for Netflix in Pittsburgh.

Top Gun: Maverick, which has earned over $1.23 billion to date and is still in theatres, is Skydance’s highest-grossing film ever. Future releases from Skydance include the seventh and eighth Mission: Impossible films from Paramount, Ghosted, and The Greatest Beer Run Ever for Apple TV+, The Old Guard 2, Heart of Stone, and a Netflix remake of the Spy Kids series.
