  • Post 5 picks up win over Pate in rain soaked week
    The Owen Dunn Post 5 baseball team was playing well last week, when the were able to see the field. Post 5 defeated Evansville Pate on Tuesday, 12-9, but games scheduled with Newburgh on Thursday and Hoosier Express on Saturday were called off due to weather. Mount Vernon was able to overcome four errors to defeat Pate. Walker Paris started the game on the mound, and lasted five innings. Paris gave up four earned runs on six hits with two strikeouts and two walks.
  • Mount Vernon Legion kicks off summer baseball season
    The Mount Vernon Legion Baseball team kicked off its season last week, starting off with a 10-9 loss to Rockport, but rebounding with a 10-9 win over Funkhouser. In the loss to Rockport, Walker Paris pitched the first four innings and gave up four earned runs on seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Mitchell Veeck came in for relief and went two and two third innings, allowing three earned runs on three hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

  • U10, U12 girls softball tryouts
    U12 and U10 Girls Softball evaluations for a local competitive team will be Aug. 10-11, and U12 only will continue on Aug. 17-18 at 10 a.m. at the field south of Indiana 62 on West Franklin Road in eastern Posey County.   • Rain doesn't stop Miles for MV
    By ANDREW FENDRICH sports@mvdemocrat.com and MADISON SNODGRASS Mount Vernon Democrat Correspondent Despite weather ranging from overcast to a downpour on the morning of Saturday, July 27, the Mount Vernon high school athletic department held their second annual “Miles for MV Athletics” two and 4-mile races. Coordinator Jace Redman said that this year’s races obtained more pre-registrations than last year did, but the rain kept attendance about the same, with around 400 participants.
  • Fire undefeated in 2013
    The Southwest Indiana Soccer Association U10 boys team Fire was undefeated in league play and winners at tournaments in Terre Haute and St. Francis. The team includes Posey County players.   • Baraccudas visit Carmi for 'Swimvitational'
    Traveling to Carmi, Ill., the Brittlebank Barracudas clocked in just shy of second place in the annual Carmi “Swimvitational” on Saturday, June 29. Olney, Ill., took first with 428 team points, and Carmi finished second with 378. Brittlebank’s 376 points fell just behind in third place. Brittlebank’s Ruth Fulwider said that the Barracudas swam well, and it showed with several first-place finishes.
