  • Parks and recreation department hopes to boost youth sports, park awareness
    Joining the Mount Vernon parks and recreation department last fall, Mount Vernon high school graduates Michael Harshbarger and Scott Royer are already moving ahead at full speed to preserve sports and recreational activity in Mount Vernon, with an eye to bring the community together. Royer, the department’s recreation manager, said that he and Harshbarger want to continue to develop the programs offered by the parks department and make sure they are still fun.
  • Sports Briefs - Part and Recreation Basketball
    Registrations are underway for boys and girls Parks and Recreation youth basketball. There will be a second and third grade boys league and girls league, and a fourth and fifth grade boys and girls league. The cost is $45 per participant; $15 for a second child. Registrations are due Friday, Oct. 28. Sign up at the Mount Vernon Parks and Recreation Department, or mail form in to P.O. Box 324. Registration forms can be downloaded at  www.mountvernon.in.gov.   • Swimmers finish second at all-star meet
    Several Brittlebank swimmers participated in the Southern Illinois All-Star Swim Meet on Saturday. The swimmers competed in the six-team event on the Illiana Swim Conference team.
  • Junior High sports begin
    Mount Vernon Junior High seventh and eighth grade football practice will begin on Thursday, Aug. 4. All seventh and eighth grade players should report to Bobcat Alley at the Junior High by 4:45 p.m. for practice. Practice will be from 5:00-7:30 p.m. Parents should plan to pick the players up at 7:30 p.m. Players who have not yet received their equipment should plan to do so immediately after the first practice session. If you have questions, please call the school's office at 833-2077.
  • Swimmers participate in state meet

  • Barracudas 5 of 12 in Olney meet
    What is one way to beat the summer heat? Many people flock to local swimming pools in the summer to get relief from the scorching summer sun. But quite a few young people also join a number of area swim teams to add a little competition to the mix. Brittlebank Pool in Mount Vernon has one of these teams and fields a very competitive group. The Brittlebank team, nicknamed the Barracudas, has had an exciting season so far, competing well in previous meets. Recently, the team competed in a 12-team meet at Olney, Ill. where they finished fifth.
  • Mount Vernon swimmers continue action during summer
    The Mount Vernon Swim Team will be very familiar with Indianapolis this summer, with four of seven meets there. Next weekend the team will travel to IUPUI for the SSC Summer Sizzler Meet. The following weekend is the conference meet with the location yet to be determined.
  • Pony League undefeated
    The Mount Vernon National Pony League team went undefeated in the regular season and tournament.
  • Sand volleyball registration deadline Friday
    The Mount Vernon Parks and Recreation Department will be having a summer sand volleyball league at Brittlebank Park. Games will be on Friday nights starting July 1. It will be an eight week league. Cost is $20 per team. Register by June 24. Registration forms can be picked up at the MVPR office or downloaded at mountvernon.in.gov.
