  • Junior legion team has 7 wins
    Some baseball fans may have been upset to hear that Mount Vernon would not be fielding a Senior American Legion team this summer. After the thrilling sectional run, fans would have loved to see the boys continue to play. But a number of the players are still playing on the junior team. And the team is having quite a successful season so far. Mount Vernon, as of last Wednesday, are 7-1.
  • Posey County Democrats Golf Scramble
    The Posey County Democrats will host a golf scramble June 11 at CountryMark Golf Course in Mount Vernon. The event will be a four-person scramble. Shotgun start is at 8 a.m. Cost to play is $65 per person. If you are interested in playing, call Dave Butler at 682-3083 or Sherry Willis at 480-3875. You can sign up your own four-person team, or if you don’t have a team, the organization will attempt to place you on a team.
  • Local boxers prepare to compete
    Boxers training at a Mount Vernon gym will see action during the early part of December.
  • Bowling team wins state title
    The Posey Lanes Team won the 29th annual USBCYA State Bowling Championship in Indianapolis. The team finidhed with a score of 3707, with the second place winner scoring 3443. Posey Lanes is on Lower New Harmony Road in Mount Vernon.
  • Koch wins body building competition

  • Mount Vernon MAC has golf camp
    Recently, the MAC center held golf camp for kids up to 18 years old. The camp consisted of three categories. Those who attended are pictured.
  • Hunter safety offered
    By Paul R. Axton Indiana Conservation Officer Conservation officer Dan Belwood will offer the Indiana Hunter Safety Course open to the public. There is no charge for the course. The course is a minimum of 10 hours and covers topics dealing with hunter responsibility, firearm safety, water safety, ATV laws, archery, muzzle-loader hunting, hanguns and wildlife management. The dates for the course will be Saturday and Sunday. Oct. 9 and 10, and will run 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. Attendance is required each day for certification.
  • Kiwanis 10K later this month
    The Sixth Annual Mount Vernon Kiwanis 10k Run/Walk is set for Saturday, Sept. 18. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. at Mount Vernon’s river front. The event includes a walk and run for racers at all levels. Trophies are awarded for first, second and third place in each gender category. Entry fee is $15 for those who register before Monday. Sept. 13. The first 100 entries will get a T-shirt. Drawings will take place throughout the day for prizes, including $100 cash, free merchandise and personal training and spinning.
  • Chamber golf scramble coming up
    The Chamber of Commerce of Southwest Indiana, which includes Posey County, is planning its annual golf scramble. The event is Wednesday, Oct. 6 at Western Hills Country Club, at 1725 Country Club Road in Mount Vernon. Prices are as follows: • Foursome plus hole sponsorship — $410 • Foursome — $320 • Individual — $80 Shotgun start is at noon. A social hour is scheduled for 5 p.m., and dinner, prizes and awards will begin at 6 p.m.
