The Black Phone is not for easily offended people. The upcoming film is a genre mash-up, with obvious horror elements like jump scares, ghosts, and horrific masks, as well as a strong thriller tone, as the protagonist, 13-year-old Finney Shaw, has a limited time to escape from a kidnapper before becoming another victim of the killer. The horror and suspense components in this film will undoubtedly make fans’ hearts race in the theatre.
The Black Phone is based on Joe Hill’s short film of the same name released in 2004. Ethan Hawke, who also appeared in Derrickson’s 2013 film Sinister, plays “The Grabber,” a serial killer with a hefty mythos akin to other horror icons like Pennywise — Hawke reportedly broke his “no villain” rule to play the part. Mason Thames portrays Finney, Madeleine McGraw portrays Finney’s sister Gwen, and James Ransone portrays Max, another Derrickson regular.
When will The Black Phone be released?
Because the film was initially planned to launch with Moonfall and Jackass Forever on February 4, delaying its release may be a method to avoid an overcrowded weekend. For the month of September, Sony Pictures‘ Uncharted: The Lost Legacy starring Tom Holland and 20th Century Studios’ Death of the Nile will be released. Despite large releases such as Jurassic World: Dominion and Pixar’s Lightyear in June, the month appears to be unusually quiet, with Warner Brothers’ Elvis starring Austin Butler and Tom Hanks and directed by Chris Columbus being the only other major release on June 24.
Despite the fact that the film won’t be released in theatres until next year, The Black Phone has a 100% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with 11 reviews. Derrickson had a streak of popular horror films before to directing Doctor Strange, including The Exorcism of Emily Rose and Sinister. Based on the current critical reception and the terrifying trailer, all signs point to this horror picture being another smash for the director.
The Black Phone will now be released in theatres on June 24, 2022, after being delayed. The film’s trailer, which was first released in October, may be seen below.
What Will Be The Theme Of The Black Phone?
Parents should be wary of this film because it deals with child abduction and murder, which are sensitive topics for some parents.
Joe Hill (author of the NOS4A2 novel) wrote a short tale that inspired The Black Phone. Finney Shaw, a 13-year-old boy, is kidnapped and ends up in the sound-proofed basement of an elusive killer known only as “The Grabber,” an effeminate guy with skin as white as paper. According to the trailer, he finds them whenever a youngster mentions his name, which appears to be a mistake made by Finney. A solitary filthy mattress and a disconnected rotary phone are in the basement with him, possibly left on the wall as a sadistic method for the Grabber to torment his victims.
Finney will be even more surprised when the phone rings and the voices of the Grabber’s previous victims answer. They help Finney plan his escape based on their own failed attempts to put an end to the killer’s spree. Meanwhile, his sister Gwen begins to see visions of Finney in captivity, which she uses to try to locate him before he meets the same fate as the previous victims.
