Any doubts about a weather-related, weather-affected Christmas box office were dispelled on Tuesday when Avatar: The Way of Water, from 20th Century Studios/Disney/Lightstorm, brought in $23.8M, bringing its domestic cume to $317.1M. Additionally, the sequel’s global box office earnings quickly surpassed $1 billion. According to director James Cameron, $2 billion is the global breakeven point for Avatar: The Way of Water.
Avatar 2 earned $50.8 million on Tuesday in the offshore market, $74.6 million globally, $712.7 million offshore, and a $1.03 billion running global total. The post-Christmas Tuesday grosses of Spider-Man: No Way Home ($21.3M) and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story ($22.5M), which have served as Avatar 2’s comparisons since its release, were both outperformed by that Tuesday’s take of the James Cameron-directed sequel.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, whose second Tuesday fell on New Year’s Eve in 2019 and earned $13.2M, earned less on its 12th day of distribution than Avatar 2.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish by Universal/DreamWorks Animation maintained steady with $6.7M on Tuesday, down 2% from its $6.8M Monday of December 26 when many people were off work for the holiday. The sequel’s running total after seven days is $32.8M, falling 40% short of Sing 2 from the previous year, which also debuted on a Wednesday.
