Trump-Supporting GOP Congressman Faces Election Fraud Accusations

Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-N.Y.), the Republican candidate for governor of New York and an advocate of former President Donald Trump’s phony charges of election fraud, is being accused of forging signatures to acquire an extra line on the ballot in the November election.

According to the Gotham Gazette, the New York State Board of Elections rejected 12,868 of the 52,096 signatures that Zeldin’s campaign filed in an effort to appear on the state’s Independence Party ballot line in November. According to the publication, candidates are permitted to appear on more than one party line on the ballot under New York’s voting system.

According to The Hill, Zeldin now lacked the necessary 45,000 valid signatures to add a third party to the ballot as a result of the rejected signatures.

The challenge was made by independent U.S. Senate candidate Diane Sare and state Libertarian Party secretary Andrew Kolstee.

According to the Libertarian Party, more than 11,000 of the rejected signatures were copies of those that had already been submitted, according to the news source.

Kolstee issued a statement in which she called the Zeldin campaign’s attempt to trick the electorate and pass as an independent campaign by submitting thousands of photocopied signatures “a slap in the face to New York State voters and the election process.”

According to the Albany Times-Union, Zeldin has an “outside shot” of being present if a judge overturns the board’s decision.

According to a Zeldin spokesman, the campaign denied producing “any photocopies,” according to the Gotham Gazette.

Veteran election lawyer Sarah Steiner told the news outlet that the fact that not all of the signatures on the petition were legitimate didn’t surprise her.

“That’s a tremendous attempt at fraud,” Steiner said, “unless someone unintentionally mixed in pages that they had photocopied and then paginated them, in which case they would still be invalid.”

The Albany Times-Union was informed by Jay Jacobs, the chair of the state’s Democratic Party, that Zeldin had supported Trump’s allegations of election tampering back in 2020.

Zeldin’s submission of 11,000 forged signatures, according to Jacobs, only highlights his dishonesty and demonstrates his willingness to deceive New Yorkers in order to further his faltering campaign.

Zeldin’s campaign website contains a page dedicated to the Election Integrity Task Force, the newspaper noted.

Following the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021, Zeldin was one of the Republicans in Congress who voted to invalidate the results of the 2020 presidential election.

When he runs against Governor Kathy Hochul and Lt. Governor Antonio Delgado in November, he and his campaign companion, a contender for lieutenant governor Alison Esposito, are expected to stick to the Conservative Party platform.
