Will Smith hosted an exclusive screening of his upcoming Apple Original Films thriller Emancipation for a star-studded guest list. On Monday, Smith shared images from the exclusive gathering, which included Rihanna, Tyler Perry, Dave Chappelle, A$AP Rocky, Kenya Barris, and others.
A quote from his post reads, “EPIC night!! We appreciate your support in seeing #Emancipation. I sincerely hope that you all had a good time. This night was magic, and your movie is something that will last forever,” Barris stated in response. He wrote that the movie was “real art” in a separate comment.
In Emancipation, directed by Antoine Fuqua, Smith plays Peter, a slave who escapes and makes his way across the Louisiana bayous with only his wits and the help of a few benevolent locals. It will premiere in theatres on December 2, and then on Apple TV+ the following week. Since Apple set a new record in an auction for the rights to produce the film, it has received a great deal of attention.

The picture is the first to star Smith since his infamous onstage slap of Chris Rock at the Oscars earlier this year.
Recently, while in Liverpool for a gig with Rock, Chapelle brought up the incident, calling it a “really bizarre choice.” He contrasted Rock’s authenticity with that of his longtime buddy Smith, who he claimed “performed an imitation of a perfect man for 30 years…” I really really hope he doesn’t reapply the mask.
During the previous year’s Tribeca Film Festival, Perry had already (and unwillingly) spoken about the incident. He emphasised that he had told Will that what he had done was wrong. He stated that Rock “was a pure champion the way he handled it. Still, [Smith] experienced his own personal tragedy. This is no justification for his behaviour; he was wrong. That’s totally not like him at all.
As a result of the event, Smith was barred from attending the Academy Awards for a decade. He expressed his “deep regret” and apology to Rock in a video posted in July.
As Fuqua previously told Deadline, “Will Smith is a fantastic man. I worked on this film with him for a few years. He’s great to work with, a great person, and he contributed greatly to the success of the film. Chris Rock is a nice person who… I hope things can be resolved amicably between them, so we can go on.
