Will There Be a Season 6 of ‘The Last Kingdom’?

Following season 5, fans of Netflix’s The Last Kingdom can expect even more from the series. This is how they will see the screen with three novels left to adapt.

Season 5 of The Last Kingdom on Netflix has come to an end, but Uhtred of Bebbanburg’s (Alexander Dreymon) narrative has at least one more act. The Last Kingdom has adapted two novels per season based on Bernard Cornwell’s historical fiction book series The Saxon Stories. The Last Kingdom has more source material awaiting an on-screen portrayal — which spectators are certain to witness — with just 10 of 13 volumes incorporated into the show by the conclusion.

The Last Kingdom, which aired on BBC for the first two seasons from 2015 to 2017 before being picked up by Netflix for season three in 2018, follows Uhtred as he strives to reclaim his ancestral birthright. Uhtred, a Saxon by birth but reared as a Dane, struggled with his dual identity over the five seasons of the drama until achieving his aim. Uhtred attempted to restore peace in the mediaeval Anglo-Saxon territories through alliances, betrayals, and numerous epic battles.

The Last Kingdom concluded with Uhtred reclaiming his ancestral realm of Bebbanburg and becoming Lord of Northumbria, independent of King Edward. Even if the series’ last episode provided a satisfactory conclusion to the plot, the advent of Uhtred’s estranged third child and Edward’s unwavering goal for a united England suggest that more is on the way, and that Uhtred’s newfound power would not be without consequences. Uhtred’s final chapter is in the works, which is good news for fans. Netflix will release a follow-up feature film titled Seven Kings Must Die to wrap out The Last Kingdom’s story.

Season 6 of The Last Kingdom: Renewed or Cancelled?

Despite the fact that The Last Kingdom’s source material extends beyond season 5, Netflix chose to discontinue the show rather than renew it for a sixth season. The streaming site did not give a reason for stopping Season 5 of The Last Kingdom, though it appears that this was the intention all along. The Last Kingdom’s production team “had structured the show in a way that season five was always going to be the last season,” according to Alexander Dreymon, speaking at MCM London Comic Con in 2021. The Last Kingdom’s narrative was built around the ten Saxon Stories novels that had been released through 2016.

Will there be a sixth season of The Last Kingdom?

Carnival announced a sequel film titled Seven Kings Must Die a few months after it was announced that The Last Kingdom would be finishing with season 5.

“There were ten books by Bernard Cornwell when we started shooting the programme, and we had built the show in such a manner that season 5 was always going to be the last season,” Dreymon explained at The Last Kingdom’s MCM London Comic-Con panel, which was moderated by writer David Craig.

“However, we’ve been talking about maybe a small prolongation for a while now… because it didn’t feel like it could be the end yet.” Then, because there was such a strong demand from fans for an encore, we decided to collaborate with Netflix on a special that will be a’movie version’ of the show and will be shot next year [2022].”

Seven Kings Must Die is now filming in Hungary, with a number of cast members from the television series returning their roles.

Fans should not expect a full 10-episode The Last Kingdom season 6 because Marchant has framed this sequel special as more of an epilogue to the main plot than the beginning of a new period.

“Season 5 seems like the final season of the TV show, and the film will be much more solo,” he stated. “It’ll be a special treat for fans of the TV show, but you can watch it even if you haven’t seen the show before.”

Updates about the film The Last Kingdom, as well as plot details

In the absence of The Last Kingdom season 6, Netflix has turned to film adaptations of Cornwell’s remaining books.

The Last Kingdom’s Twitter account stated on January 31 that filming for Seven Kings Must Die had begun. The film’s duration is projected to be roughly two hours. Seven Kings Must Die will be based on the final three Saxon Stories novels: War of the Wolf, Sword of Kings, and War Lord, according to Netflix’s official synopsis. For the time being, casting information have been kept under wraps, though it has been announced that Alexander Dreymon will reprise his role as Uhtred. Netflix has not yet announced a release date, but the film is expected to premiere in the first half of 2023.

“Season 5 does feel like the end of the TV series, and the movie will be much more standalone,” executive producer Nigel Marchant said of Seven Kings Must Die’s plot in reference to The Last Kingdom’s TV series. It’ll be a special pleasure for fans of the TV show, but it’s also worth watching even if you’ve never seen it.” The Last Kingdom’s epilogue-style conclusion as a feature-length film on Netflix should provide a fitting conclusion to Uhtred’s journey.
